MICHAEL'S MOUNT, Marazion, Cornwall. One of the most spectacular landmarks on the Cornish coast between The Lizard and Penzance, St. Michael's Mount rises 300 feet from the sea in Mount's Bay. The island takes its name from the monks of Mont St. Michel in Normandy who, being given the Mount by Edward the Confessor, founded a Benedictine monastery there in 1044. It later became a military stronghold, and in 1657 became the property of the St. Aubyn family. From 1954 the island has been owned by the National Trust.
